Assessing Impact Before It’s Too Late

We present two exercises to help you when the bully attempts to exert control. It is important that you control the definitions of who you are.

For each exercise, A and B, there are two sets of questions to ask.

Exercise A

You have seen how to recognize bullying. The first exercise is designed to help you counter the bully’s false accusations so you can remind yourself of just how competent you are.

There are four areas that will help you begin your recovery from bullying. These are the areas or aspects about yourself that you, friends, family, and co-workers (if any can be trusted) will evaluate.

The four areas are:

• How I Relate to Others

Descriptions of strengths and weaknesses in

relationships with friends and co-workers.

• How Other People See Me

Do you get along well with others? Are you seen

as angry? Helpful to others? Shy?

• My Performance at Work

Describe the way you handle job assignments.

Are you on time? A procrastinator? A “neatnick”?

• My Ability to Reason and Solve Problems

Do you like the freedom to improvise? Are you a

quick learner? Do you have special knowledge in

certain areas?

Now take some time to write down as many phrases as you can on the following page to describe yourself. Be candid with yourself. Don’t be shy or humble.

Note: As with all exercises, we suggest that you create lists and fill in boxes on separate pages so that parts of this book may be shared with friends without the risk of revealing information you’d prefer to keep to yourself.
